At Food on the Move, we’re committed to ensuring everyone has access to healthy food. With one in eight Rhode Islanders facing food insecurity, our year-round mobile produce markets make a difference with innovative solutions to overcome barriers to access and affordability of produce, the most common obstacles to eating fruits and vegetables. We bring fresh fruits and veggies right to the neighborhoods that need it most, offering a 50% discount for SNAP users.
But we don’t stop there. We honor the cultural diversity of our community by offering culturally appropriate produce, a term to describe the foods that meet the diverse tastes and needs of customers based on their cultural traditions and preferences. Our truck is designed to keep produce fresh, making sure the healthiest options reach underserved communities.

Our Food on the Move team is currently conducting a longitudinal study to assess how shopping at Food on the Move and receiving SNAP incentives impacts chronic diseases like diabetes and high cholesterol, fruit and vegetable consumption, and overall health outcomes. For a subset of customers who reported diabetes or prediabetes, we’re gathering biometric data—such as hemoglobin A1c, lipids, blood pressure, waist circumference, and weight—and connecting this data with survey and shopping information using unique participant codes.
Food on the Move is made possible by generous grants from the AARP Foundation, USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, and the Rhode Island Foundation. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Champlin Foundation for their support in purchasing our truck and trailer.
